Alma Mater and Paris finally immortalized:)!
Harry’s New York Bar is an iconic bar in Paris and the oldest cocktail bar in Paris.
In 1911 Harry MacElhone was approached to open up a bar in Paris that would be fitted/created from a dismantled NYC bar…Harry said yes, so on Thanksgiving Day 1911 Harry’s Bar (originally called New York Bar) was opened and the rest is history. Harry’s Bar immediately became recognized for its unusual cocktail creations. Hemmingway, Sartre and many others came to Harry’s to enjoy these new types of libation — including 2 of Harry’s first time (now historic) creations called a Bloody Mary and the White Lady. In 1924 Harry’s Bar also started a straw-vote for Presidential elections — Harry’s patrons have only been wrong 2 out of 25 times over the past 89 years.
The tradition at Harry’s Bar is for expats and visiting patrons to hang their college Alma Mater banner on the wood-paneled walls.
After noticing my Alma Mater’s banner (Temple University) was not present on Harry’s famed walls…As a proud Owl (Temple’s mascot) I immediately obtained a Temple banner and set a time to present my banner to Harry’s Bar for official placement on these storied walls!
Flavia and Anne joined me to celebrate this historic :) moment and of course to enjoy a few of Harry’s famous cocktails!
Harry’s NY Bar is also known for it’s downstairs piano bar, a terrific place to relax and enjoy some classic piano tunes. I rolled the dice and (strategically) asked management at Harry’s if I could have my banner placed above the stairs that leads down to the piano bar, so all will be forced to admire Temple’s Cherry and White colors as they descended and/or waited for entry to the piano bar room.
Drum roll please ……
